Daffodil Delight at the Flower Show!
What a blooming brilliant day it was for St. Mary’s Primary School, Killyclogher, at this year’s ‘Belfast Spring Fair and Flower Show 2026’ organized by Belfast City Council at Malone House. Members of St. Mary’s Eco Council staged delightful daffodil entries in this year’s competition, held on Saturday 25th April 2026.
The children worked really hard to grow and care for their daffodils in the school’s poly tunnel. They watered them, checked on them and waited patiently as green shoots popped up, followed by magical golden petals.
With over fifty entries in the National Flower Show Children’s category, the judges had a super tricky job. Pupil, Olivia Murphy, won ‘Best in Class’ with her Narcissus Defence Corps daffodil variety which was then considered for the ‘Division 1 Best Bloom in Show’. Olivia’s daffodil placed as ‘Reserve’ across the entire show! Other St. Mary’s gardeners, Meabh Russell, Emer Murphy and Ronan Arkinson shared ‘Highly Commended’ in the children’s category.
Teacher, Mrs Hardy, who worked with the school’s Eco Council to grow daffodils said, “Huge congratulations to all the young St. Mary’s gardeners who took part. Placing four times in the Flower Show children’s category is an amazing result and Olivia’s daffodil certainly caught the eye of many of the judges! These winning entries have brought colour, happiness and lots of smiles to everyone at school! We look forward to seeing what growing adventure these green-fingered pupils take on next at St. Mary’s.”
